Information about Zoom

Please take a moment to read the following before diving in...

Zoom Information

This short guide will help you set up Zoom on your computer or tablet, and is intended to provide tips on using Zoom to support your experience during our live-streaming classes.

Before the start of our live-streaming classes:

  • Sign up for a free personal account with Zoom and download the app to your computer or tablet (if you haven’t already).
  • Conduct a test Zoom meeting to verify your video and audio are properly set up, and familiarize yourself with the interface and controls: https://zoom.us/test

    Using video during the classes is optional.

Zoom Setup

Create your own account

To sign up for your own free account visit https://zoom.us/signup and enter your email address. You will receive an email from Zoom. In this email, click Activate Account.

Sign in to your Zoom account on the web

You can log in to your Zoom account on the web at any time, at https://zoom.us/signin. Once you're logged in, use the panel on the left side to navigate the Zoom web portal. You can update your profile, schedule a meeting, edit your settings, and more.

Update your profile

You can update your profile by adding a profile picture, set your time zone, update your password and more. To access your Zoom profile, sign in to the Zoom web portal and click Profile.

Download Zoom

You can download the Zoom app by following the prompts when clicking the class link, or by independently accessing the app at: https://zoom.us/download

If possible, please use a computer, laptop, or tablet (Zoom on phones is less functional).

If you are finding the audio quality is not good, or that the connection is not stable, I recommend you connect your audio via phone (and continue to view video via internet connection). Dialing in via phone can be done at the outset of connecting to the class, or anytime during the class (pop-up menu accessible next to microphone icon).

How to Join the Class

Log in to your account directly at:   https://clearlight.thinkific.com/users/sign_in

Once in the module of the class you will be joining (ie Mindful Yoga, MamaBe Pregnancy, etc), pick the current date of the live-streaming classes. (Use the navigation box icon on the top left of the page to move between sections).

There will be a direct link to access the Zoom meeting here.

Basic Zoom Controls

Mute/Unmute

Your ability to be heard (your audio function) can be muted and unmuted wherever you see the icon of a microphone. On most computers or laptops, this icon is located to the bottom-left of your Zoom window

Video On/Off

Your video can be turned on and off where you see the icon of a video camera. On most computers or laptops, this icon is to the bottom-left of your Zoom window. Do what is most comfortable for you. If you would like be visible to the group at the check-in, or would like me to keep an eye on your alignment, etc, you’ll need to have your video on, with your camera positioned so that I can see you.

If you prefer to use a virtual background while operating on a computer, laptop, or iOS phone, that is fine. To do so, find the Video icon, click the arrow beside it, and select “Choose Virtual Background.” You can choose an option from the default images or add your own. Depending on the quality of your camera, and the operating system of your computer, the option and quality of the virtual background may vary.

Hide Self View

If you find that it is distracting to see yourself on video on your screen, you may choose to hide your own video from your view. On a computer or laptop, hover your mouse over your own video until you see a small blue icon at the top right with three dots in it (“...”)—click on these dots and choose “Hide Self View” in the dropdown menu that appears. To show the self view again, you may click on the text at the top of your Zoom window that says “Show Self View.”

Gallery View vs. Speaker View

Gallery View allows you to see videos of all who are present, this is great when we are gathering for conversation. Once the practice begins you may want to switch to Speaker View.

Speaker View only displays the video of the person who is talking.

On desktop versions, you may change your view by clicking on the view-changing toggle button at the top right of your window. If the text says “Speaker View,” then clicking on it will switch your view to Speaker View. If it says “Gallery View,” then clicking on it will switch your view to Gallery View.

Once I start leading the practice, I’ll “Spotlight” my video, this may automatically change your view to Speaker View. You can switch back to Gallery View if you prefer.

Chat

You can communicate via the chat window (live texting so to speak), you can choose to send a chat message to everyone in the group, or to a select individual by selecting the recipient (or “Everyone”) from a dropdown menu just above where you type your chat. For Mindful Yoga classes this will be the only way to communicate once the practice has begun.

Trouble-shooting for Sound or Image Quality

The most frequent challenge encountered is around sound and image quality – which is usually a result of internet bandwidth issues, heavy traffic on the local network, or occasionally Zoom itself seems to get overloaded.

Assuming this is not an issue at my end (which would be the case if everyone in our group is experiencing the same issue), then there are things you can do to address the situation. If you are encountering sound issues or challenges with image quality, try the following in order:

1. Be sure that your computer preferences/settings allow for apps such as Zoom to access your computer microphone and camera;

2. Close all other apps that access the internet on your computer;

3. Turn your video off so that more bandwidth is available:

4. If the above doesn’t help, you can try to log out and log in again;

OR

4.  Access the meeting via phone audio (this will allow the audio to be accessed over the phone line instead of the internet). This works very well to address audio issues, and once you do it, you’ll discover it is quite simple. To do so, click the audio menu (little arrow next to the microphone option) and select ‘Switch to phone audio’. Select your local Zoom number, and follow the prompts such as entering the meeting ID.

Please be in touch if you need to walk through any of this with myself (Clearlight), or if you have persistent issues. I’m here to figure it out with you.
